Google Classroom
We will be using Google Classroom for important information and assignments. The most up to date information will be posted on Google Classroom! Parents wanting to access their student's GC, will need to log in using their child's information. All assignments will be posted on the Google Calendar, which can be viewed below.

Supplies for 6th grade ELA
1 – Two-Pocket folder with center prongs. Students will hold on to paper based assignments they are working on as well as their AR log.

AR

Students will be given an AR goal each nine weeks. Making their AR goal will count as a sizeable portion of their grade each quarter. Students may read books from the school library, public library or home. They must get ELA teacher approval to read the book and then ELA teacher or librarian must approve to test. This is done on the student's AR log. The easiest way to stay ahead of this is to ensure your student is getting their AR goal completed in the first half of the nine weeks. This will make meeting their AR goal a smoother process for students and care takers.

 Classroom Library

We love to see our students reading here at TVCS! Reading a wide variety of books promotes comprehension in every subject and for the rest of their lives. To keep books easily accessible for my students, I have books available in my classroom as well as our school library. To view the books in my room, click here. The classroom ID is MrsZarate and the password is BuffaloELA. Not all books are available for all students, so if you have any concerns, please let me know! Some books are only available if a student has a YA permission form on file with the library. If there are any books that you'd prefer I not let your student borrow, please contact me and I will make a note of it.

Tutoring

Tutoring for my class will be every Tuesday after school. You can find the tutoring letter here if you need a copy to sign and turn in for permission for your student to attend tutoring.

YEAR OVERVIEW

First Quarter: GRIT
We will be reading A Long Walk to Water. Students will be engaged in a GRIT project based on Angela Duckworth's GRIT TED talk. Students will be reading nonfiction texts about what it takes to be gritty and succeed in difficult situations.

Second Quarter: Man vs Nature
Our novel this quarter is Hatchet. We'll be diving into poetry and narrative writing.

Third Quarter: It's All Greek to Us!
This nine weeks we are reading excerpts from Black Ships Before Troy. This covers the epic story of The Illiad. We'll be exploring Greek root words and how they can help decipher meaning for unfamiliar words.

Fourth Quarter: We've Come Full Circle
Our final quarter this year we will be reading Touching Spirit Bear and furiously reviewing for our final FAST test.
